The culture that is present today in the Caribbean is the result of many different influences varying from those introduced by ruling colonial countries, to influences that the slaves stressed, and even from brand new colonies being developed. The diverse and multifaceted culture that is present today is a direct result of the institution of slavery. He was born in 1181, the middle of a time of great increases and expansions in the medieval West, in Assisi, the place where this was strongest. His parents were Pietro and Pica Bernardone. His father was a wealthy silk merchant. St. Francis spent his childhood in extravagant living and pleasure-seeking.He was always in trouble and ran around Assisi with his friends, eating, drinking, and having a good time. He went to war to fight for Assisi against Perugia and was taken prisoner in 1202. Eventually he was released and once again, returned to his old carefree ways. He became seriously ill for a while but thenHe experienced a vision of Christ at Spoleto which was then followed by anothervision while he returned to Assisi. One vision was of Christ telling him, Go and rebuild my church. It is falling down. These visions are what changed his lifestyle forever. Despite his wealthy, comfortable life, St. Francis chose a life of poverty. He wore ragsand wooden shoes on his bare feet. His father became furious at this and threatened to disown him. Francis returned his fathers money and clothes that he had taken to helprebuild the church and severed relations with his father. St. Francis rebuilt San Damiano with money begged from his townsmen. Hewent on a pilgrimage to Rome in 1206, identifying himself with the poor and helping totake care of those who suffered from leprosy. For two or three years he lived alone,wandering. Eventually, seven disciples joined him. Some of them were older, some middle-aged, but they lived together as a community at the Portiuncula in Assisi, near aleper colony. Here, he devoted himself completely to his lifes work of poverty and preaching. St. Francis and the other preachers stood out from the other Italian poor preachers of the time because they had respect for, and showed obedience to the Church authorities and their doctrinal orthodoxy. They lived in simple huts and their churcheswere small. They slept on the ground and had no tables or chairs, as well as very fewIn 1209, St. Francis founded the order of Friars Minor, which took the people of that time by surprise because by doing this, Francis presented poverty, chastity, and obedience in terms of troubadours and courts of love. Another incident was the canticle of the Sun, in 1224. He wrote it when he visited Clareat Assisi while he was extremely sick and uncomfortable. This was considered the climax of supernatural events that had occurred to himSt. Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226, at age forty five. He was canonized in 1228 by his old friend, Gregory IX. St. Francis was buried in the church of St. Giorgio and Assisi is now a pilgrimage centre for Franciscan devotees from all around the world. I dont think that there are very many people around today that would ever deliberately force themselves into poverty and a life spent wandering and living withsick and poor strangers, while being blind and extremely sick himself at times, all because of a strong devotion to God. It seems incredible, especially in the world ofwhich we live today, that a person living comfortably with wealth and all that life has tooffer, could give it all up. St. Francis was a caring and sensitive man who loved the world around him and believed that it was all a result of a gift from God. His belief was so strong that he felt he had to, in a sense, give up his life, just as Christ had done, to serve his Lord. St. Francis left us with so much before he died. He rebuilt many of Romes churches and with the help of St. Clare, formed the Franciscans and the Throughout this past century, we have seen much more interest in St. Francis butwe have had a tendency to only see the traits and characteristics about him that are shownin movies or individual writings. Because of this, we often see cartoons and caricaturesof St. Francis as a sentimental nature-lover or even as a hippy drop-out from society. These humorous portrayals keep us from seeing how stern and devoted he really was. They dont show his unbelievable and undeniable love for God. As the reader moves on to the second line, â€Å"Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,† Langston creates imagery for the reader by using a crystal stair as a metaphor to symbolize the mother’s life in contrast to the crystal stair. Crystal has connotations of beauty and visual smoothness.  It is also a valuable piece of stone that only the wealthy could purchase in high volume such as that of a crystal stair. The crystal stair is very important to the body of the poem. Without this metaphor, the poem probably would not have the same effect on how the reader interprets it. Moving on to the third sentence, â€Å"Its had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor-Bare.† The tacks and splinters could represent pain or scars left from the mother’s past. The boards that were torn up could represent imperfection; a struggle or permanent loses and voids in her life. â€Å"No carpet on the floor-Bare† could mean that the mother has nothing left to show for her life. Her life as a youth could have been stripped from her through slavery. So she wants her son to make something of himself despite the criticism and racism he is challenged with. The poem doesn’t state specifically to the reader where the setting takes place but there are two hints Hughes gives that leads the reader into the assumption that the South is a primary focus. First, the poem was written in 1922, which was a time of the Harlem Renaissance. Second, the mother is speaking the words of the poem in a Negro dialect, which forces the reader to assume she’s black. With these two facts, the reader can reasonably come to the conclusion that the mother has probably dealt with the racism and prejudges from the white culture. The 1920’s were a time of struggle for many blacks and Negro rights since slavery was abolished in 1865 by the 13th Amendment. By reading the history of the poet, Langston Hughes, the reader has a general idea that his own mother could have been a slave or had grown up during the time that slavery was being abolished and the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments came into effect. The author made very good points and did not have a bias in this article because he was able to provide information from both points of view. With having to young children I do not feel it is in their best interest to watch violence on TV or movies but at the same time it is so common on television and even in cartoons that it is impossible to prevent them from seeing it.I agree with the author on parenting and authority at the end of the day you are the main example and role model in your child’s eyes and by teaching them right and wrong and by them having a understanding of what is right and wrong will help them to see that violence is not the answer and does not solve problems. Overall this was a great article it covered many points of views and made me as the reader consider different scenarios of why or how violence is interpreted today and what is the cause and who is to actually blame.I feel out of the two articles this one carried the best argument because in the first article TV ISNT VIOLENT ENOUGH by Mike Oppenheim the author seems to already have a bias and provides a lot of information and to me it was k ind of misleading because it went into detail about stabbing and arteries and was kind of all over the place. The writer thanked the other person for â€Å"doing great proofreading,† but he followed that comment with â€Å"Not copy editing [sic]; we were both cautious about that, as our strongly held opinions don’t often match.† My first impression was that the book’s author has or had at the time a fundamental misunderstanding of copyediting (since the book was published, the closed-compound version of that term has come to prevail), as he implied that such a process would interfere with his expression of his views. (The person who assisted him is an expert in the book’s subject matter.) That’s absurd, because no editing role certainly not copyediting involves revisions of writers’ expressions of their beliefs or judgments. A developmental editor for a book publisher, or an assigning editor of a periodical, might discuss this issue with a writer but generally does not impose on the author’s convictions; presumably, the opportunity for the author to express these ideas is the reason the content is being published in the first place. But then I considered that perhaps, by â€Å"strongly held opinions,† the writer meant his notions of what constitutes good writing. Perhaps he was referring to the fact that his ideas about how to construct prose conflicts with those of the person who reviewed the manuscript for him. This possibility led me to reflect on my long-held opinion, acquired through decades of painful experience, that there’s a strong correlation between good writers and good grace when it comes to responding to grammatical and syntactical revisions, concomitant with the disturbing degree to which many poor writers protest such improvements. For in this case, the book suffered greatly not only from the fact it, at least before it was submitted to the publisher, was proofread but not copyedited. It also was compromised by the apparent lack of copyediting (or any editing) during the production phase of publication. The writing is verbose, repetitive, poorly organized, and clumsy (barely) competent, but dull and tiring to read, and in dire need of attention from both a developmental editor and a copy editor. This mediocrity was all the more disappointing because of the anticipation with which I had approached the book, which covers a topic of great interest to me. I was especially puzzled about the writing quality because the book dates to the early 1980s, the last period in which a reader could count on well-edited books before, for many but fortunately not all publishing companies, the bottom line became more important than the line edit. Ultimately, though, that this book is an exception to the rule is not the writer’s fault; the publisher let him and me and other readers of this book down. But writers aren’t helpless in the face of this trend; if they lack a partner or other close associate qualified and willing to review a manuscript (or even if such an ally is put to work), they can resort to pre-editing. That’s the now-widespread practice of preempting a publishing company’s possible neglect or short-changing of the editing process, and/or improving the chance of the manuscript’s acceptance, by hiring a freelance developmental editor and/or a freelance copy editor to polish it before submitting it to publishers. It’s unfortunate that the assembly-line model that now prevails in the publishing industry necessitates this step for one or both reasons stated, but though it requires a financial investment by the writer, it’s a wise strategy that enhances the likelihood both that the manuscript will be published and that the book will succeed. Another wise strategy is to have a little humility about one’s writing ability and the value of one or more objective second opinions. I’m a good writer, though not a great one, but even if I did claim (and perhaps actually have) more talent, I would, as I do in reality, welcome both substantial and mechanical revisions that make me look even better. For me and many good and great writers it’s a no-brainer, but that indirect reference to my earlier comment about the correlation of writing talent to amenability to editing reminds me of another observation: Common sense isn’t as common as it should be. Likert scale gets applied to the questions from 8-26 for studying respondents attitude for brands and purchase decisions.
