Determining Properties of Pero essays
Determining Properties of Pero essays Determining Properties of Peroxidase Enzyme Jeremy Jones and 2:00 Tues. 1406 lab classmates Biology Department, Tarrant County College, Fort Normal function of peroxidase enzyme is to convert hydrogen peroxide to into water and oxygen. Experiments were carried out to check peroxidase activity at different concentration levels, pH levels, temperatures, and check effect of boiling and Peroxidase is a large protein containing hundreds of amino acids and has an iron ion located at its active site. It is easy to obtain and work with, making it an ideal candidate for lab work. The peroxidase reaction can be measured by following the increased oxygen levels. The simplest way to measure oxygen levels is to test with a dye that reacts to chemically active oxygen. The dye will turn from colorless to colored in a dye-coupled reaction. Guaiacol is a dye that turns brown when oxidized. The enzyme, substrate, and dye can be mixed together and immediately placed in a spectrophotometer. The absorbance at 500nm will increase as more color accumulates. Hypotheses: 1. More peroxidase activity will be observed at higher levels of concentration. 2. More peroxidase activity will be observed at mid-level temperatures and mid-pH levels. 3.Boiling will cause complete denaturation of 4. Hydroxylamine will inhibit all peroxidase activity. All experiments carried out as per Biological Investigations, 6th Edition by Warren D. Dolphin. See Lab Topic 6, Determining the Properties of an Enzyme. 1. Peroxidase activity increased steadily with increased concentration. Tubes 6 and 7 with 2 ml of extract actually went off the absorbance scale at 100 2. Temperature was measured from 4 degrees Celsius to 48 degrees Celsius. Optimum results were obtained at ...

Nursing Issues In Australia - Staff Shortage Essay
Nursing Issues In Australia - Staff Shortage - Essay Example Projections show that, by the year 2021, twenty three percent of the population in Australia will be over sixty years of age. This has a double implication on the health care system. One, the work force, is shrinking which means a reduction in the number of working nurses. Two, the nation will be facing a high incidence of chronic diseases and degenerative diseases. The demand of the specialize services of the nurses is increasing at a higher rate than the expansion of the workforce. Most families are not willing or are unable to take care of their aged at home. This put the burden of caring for this population on the health workers (Elder et Al, 2009, p. 137). The social and employment pattern for women is changing. The health workforce especially nursing has predominantly been women. The changing pattern of workforce causing a shortage as the women is opting to work in other sectors. In Australia, the shortage of nurses is aggravating because of the number of nurses that are departing. As the nurses leave the profession, others are not joining as nurses. The working conditions of the nurses are not favorable causing nursesââ¬â¢ dissatisfaction. When alternative opportunities arise they exist. Further, the recruitment of nurses is low in comparison with the demand. There is a pool of nurses that are not willing to work in the health workforce. This brings an imbalance between the demand and the supply of nurses. The shortage of nurses is as a result of the number of students training the profession. The institutions that are offering the course have financial constrains (Chaboyer et Al, 2006, p. 467). This limits the admission of students beyond a certain number. The institutions are also suffering from a shortage of educator in the nursing faculties. These limitations lead to a low output of qualified staff. These are part of the contemporary issues affecting the profession of nursing. The nation also experiences a delay in

Ku Klux Klans Effect on America Essay Example for Free
Ku Klux Klans Effect on America Essay The first Klan had first started around the year of 1860s. The first klan had lead up to the effects of the 1920s. The KKK had a tumultious start, and it had a major effect on America in the 1920s. The first klan began in Tennessee, by six Confederate Army Officers, in the winter of 1865. Ku klux Klan rose about four million and spread from the South into the Midwest region and Northern states and even into Canada. The name of the Ku Klux Klan is ââ¬Å"derived from the Grrek word kyklos, meaning circleâ⬠(Wikimedia Foundation). ââ¬ËKlan was added for the purpose of alliterationâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Ku Klux Klanâ⬠). The infamous burning-cross icon became a symbol of the KKK in the 1920ââ¬â¢s, which was one of many tactics used for intimidation. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of Klan members were the white robes they wore along with cone shaped hats that covered their faces. These costumes accomplished their goal of making them look more outlandish and terrifying, and for the intimidation of their victims (Smith). The Klan was pretty selective in accepting members, only WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants) could become members. These members possessed the ideology of white supremacy to all other races and ethnic divisions, similar to the concept of Neo-Nazism, however they claim to have based their beliefs on Christian values and nativism. It is often thought that the KKK only hated African-Americans, but many other groups acquired hatred from the Klan, such as Jews, Catholics , homosexuals and various immigrant groups. Anti-Defamination League). Even though the stock started to gain their stocks and shares didnt stop the Great Depression from happening (Kelly). Many people wonder why any group of people would posses such a hatred Dubbs 3 for certain groups of people. While there is no legitimate justification, one factor contributing to their hate was the rapid economic progression in the North, and the stagnant economy of the South. This may have been what angered the white southerners so much that they put blame onto the black population, along with leftover racial disputes from the times of slavery (Trueman). People of today also wonder how society could permit such destruction of life, and also support it. Back then, the Klan had many sources of income including membership fees, funds acquired from various events and sales of Klan propaganda, as well as free will donations. ââ¬Å"This income made the Klanââ¬â¢s many forms of media and strategy possible, such as mass mailings, pamphlets and public events and protests. They also did community service projects such as ââ¬Ëadopt a highwayââ¬â¢ programs to make themselves look good in the eyes of their communitiesâ⬠(Anti-Defamanation League). The members of the Ku Klux Klan did everything in their power to prevent the black community from exercising their newly acquired rights, which was often done during massive events. During a typical KKK event, they dressed in robes symbolizing their rank, then went on nighttime raids, during which they would whip and murder blacks and any of their supporters (ââ¬Å"Ku Klux Klanâ⬠). These events, unfortunately, were extremely effective. This lack of a political presence is what allowed the Klan to exist for such a long period of time. KKK existed from the initial founding until around 1870, ââ¬Å"when congress passed the KKK act which allowed authorities to end such activities by force and penalize anyone who affiliated with terrorist organizationsâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Ku Klux Klanâ⬠). At this time, blacks were the only targets of the KKK, for the most part.

Oedipus Rex :: Oedipus Rex Poem Essays
Oedipus Rex Sophocles Awake ye men of earth; remove thy shackles from thy body and acquaint yourself with the mother as you pass through creation in the manner of a tragedian romance, embodying nature and spirit. And in your night crusade, you will perceive a revelation of the most superlative feelings that come not from words or form, but from light. Hope Saphos DeVenuto A vaporous energy passes before us as a wave which carries us through the categories of the mind of an ancient past in Aristotelian truth. Aristotle's cool objective eyewhich ascends from his deductive logic, introduces to the arts a canvas of inner landscapes that becomes an expedition of mans human instinct for imitation, harmony and rhythm. Aristotle's observation of the human experience becomes a psychological basis of modern learning by accumulating the facts and causes of an existing world. In his poetics, life is poetic. Everything written has its own style and rhythm which concludes that poetry arose from an inborn gift that developed into two directions. Comedy which is the pillory of the meaner actions of life and tragedy which stages a nobleman's vulnerabilities into full blown out drama from the simple and continuous fundamental questioning of his moment to moment solitary acts. What can be more wonderful than a man and woman who are painted as descendant characters from fables and myths of a culture and at the same time dissect their humanness, interweaving human idiosyncrasy with the power of fate? This depicts the poetic art form of Sophocle's Oedipus Rex ,which possesses an imitation of an action that is serious, complete and of a certain immensity that expresses language with creative adornments and dramatic action. According to Aristotle, plot is the most crucial aspect of tragedy and to achieve this dimension of space, the plot must have a beginning, middle and an end. Just as a living organism has a biorhythm, so does the plot through the emotional, intellectual, and physical activity of the events from "calamity to good fortune or from good fortune to calamity." Complication, unraveling and surprise are the components of the best living tragedy, along with the noble individual who brings about his own downfall through his own debilities. Through Oedipus Rex there is a definite movement of the adult and child experience where the affair may or may not happen. As history deals with our particular past, poetry is more philosophical with a higher and more universal meaning. If one were to be the child of Oedipus and Jocasta, there would be no feelings of shame, only the feelings of suffering a great loss of both parents and a misunderstood sexuality.

Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ ââ¬ÅMother To Sonââ¬Â Essay
An Explication of Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠Langston Hughes once stated in his own words that his whole purpose for writing was, ââ¬Å"to explain and illuminate the Negro condition in America.â⬠In the poem ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, he denotes his belief on racism in America. In ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, a mother is giving advice to her son about life from her perspective and experiences. She wants her son to keep striving on what he believes and to have a more prosperous life than what she had. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. He lived with his grandmother for most of her life but often stayed with his mother in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in poverty and was exposed to racism in his youth. However, he believed that things would change and his culture must press on. By 1929, he was a well know poet during the Harlem Renaissance, the growth of African-American art and literature in Harlem, New York. He promoted the African-American culture and supported the Civil Rights Movement. Hughes used poetry to express himself and has written over sixty poems. One of them being ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, which expresses how the blacks must stand tall and believe in a better future. Starting with the title, ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, allows the reader to trust that the poem is going to be about a mother and a son. Just by reading the title, the reader may wonder what type of poem this is going to be. It shows a sense of leadership because a son sees his mother as an authoritative figure, someone who he can trust, someone who he has a bond with. Mothers are usually a figure who nurtures and molds their children into the right path. This gives the reader a hint that the poem is a poem were, the mother, in some way or another is molding or guiding the son into the right path. In the very first line, ââ¬Å"Well, son, Iââ¬â¢ll tell you:â⬠gives the reader a good idea in which direction the poem is taking. At this point, the reader can trust that the mother is going to give some kind of advice as mothers frequently do. As the reader moves on to the second line, ââ¬Å"Life for me ainââ¬â¢t been no crystal stair,â⬠Langston creates imagery for the reader by using a crystal stair as a metaphor to symbolize the motherââ¬â¢s life in contrast to the crystal stair. Crystal has connotations of beauty and visual smoothness.à It is also a valuable piece of stone that only the wealthy could purchase in high volume such as that of a crystal stair. The crystal stair is very important to the body of the poem. Without this metaphor, the poem probably would not have the same effect on how the reader interprets it. Moving on to the third sentence, ââ¬Å"Its had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor-Bare.â⬠The tacks and splinters could represent pain or scars left from the motherââ¬â¢s past. The boards that were torn up could represent imperfection; a struggle or permanent loses and voids in her life. ââ¬Å"No carpet on the floor-Bareâ⬠could mean that the mother has nothing left to show for her life. Her life as a youth could have been stripped from her through slavery. So she wants her son to make something of himself despite the criticism and racism he is challenged with. The poem doesnââ¬â¢t state specifically to the reader where the setting takes place but there are two hints Hughes gives that leads the reader into the assumption that the South is a primary focus. First, the poem was written in 1922, which was a time of the Harlem Renaissance. Second, the mother is speaking the words of the poem in a Negro dialect, which forces the reader to assume sheââ¬â¢s black. With these two facts, the reader can reasonably come to the conclusion that the mother has probably dealt with the racism and prejudges from the white culture. The 1920ââ¬â¢s were a time of struggle for many blacks and Negro rights since slavery was abolished in 1865 by the 13th Amendment. By reading the history of the poet, Langston Hughes, the reader has a general idea that his own mother could have been a slave or had grown up during the time that slavery was being abolished and the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments came into effect. This was also during a time when Congress had passed several laws to protect Negroesââ¬â¢ civil rights. In contrast, many whites disregarded the newly won rights of Negroes. (World Book Encyclopedia. Civil Rights. Field Enterprises Educational Corporation. Chicago. 1977. P.468) Like many other Lyrics, ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, is expressing the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker and is written in first person point of view. In the very first line, ââ¬Å"Well, son, Iââ¬â¢ll tell youâ⬠, Hughes demonstrates to the reader that this is going to be a first person point of view. Readers can see that theà mother is the central character in this poem because the reader is focused on her next word as she describes her view of life. The mother speaks her thoughts and feelings for the entirety of the poem but the boy doesnââ¬â¢t speak at all. This is called a dramatic monologue. Langstonââ¬â¢s attitude toward life in ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠is slightly unpleasant but solemn and trustworthy. The reader gains a sense of sympathy for the mother as she tells her son about her misfortunes from the past. In ââ¬Å"Mother to Sonâ⬠, a mother is urging her son to keep striving with assurance to have a more prosperous life than she had. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. He was a well-known poet during the Harlem Renaissance. He believed strongly in his culture and he had faith that things would change for the better. The title itself gives the reader a sense of insight on what the poem is going to be about as it clearly uses ââ¬Å"Motherâ⬠, an authoritative figure in which a son would trust and look up to for guidance. On the other hand, a motherââ¬â¢s own instinct is to her child into the right path. Langston clearly demonstrates this in this piece of poetry. Langston also uses imagery for the reader by using the crystal stair as a metaphor. The setting is not specifically stated but Langston has granted a couple of clues for which the reader can rely. The date the poem was written and the word choices he uses lets the reader know that the setting is probably in the South. Langstonââ¬â¢s background gives the reader the idea that he may have reflected on his motherââ¬â¢s past and the events that follows slavery abolishment in 1865 when he began writing, ââ¬Å"Mother to Son.â⬠This poem was written as a Lyric. Like many other lyrics, it was written in first person point of view and the poet used a dramatic monologue when the mother speaks of her thoughts and feelings, whereas, the boy doesnââ¬â¢t speak at all. Although, Langston shows a slightly unpleasant attitude in his tone, he is solemn and trustworthy. The reader gains a sense of sympathy for the character of the mother

Chinese character Essay
Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of others, but may also be autodidactic.[1] Any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational. There are three forms of learning. formal education, informal education and non-formal education. Systems of schooling involve institutionalized teaching and learning in relation to a curriculum, which itself is established according to a predetermined purpose of the schools in the system. Schools systems are sometimes also based on religions, giving them different curricula. In formal education, a curriculum is the set of courses and their content offered at a school or university. The term preschool refers to a school for children who are not old enough to attend kindergarten. It is a nursery school. Preschool education is important because it can give a child the edge in a competitive world and education climate. Public primary schools are divided into two categories based on the medium of instruction: â⬠¢ Malay-medium National Schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan, SK) â⬠¢ non-Malay-medium National-type Schools (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan, SJK), also known as ââ¬Å"vernacular schoolsâ⬠,[7] further divided into o National-type School (Chinese) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina), SJK(C)), Mandarin-medium and simplified Chinese writing o National-type School (Tamil) (Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil), SJK (T)), Tamil-medium All schools admit students regardless of racial and language background. Malay and English are compulsory subjects in all schools. All schools use the same syllabus for non-language subjects regardless of the medium of instruction. The teaching of the Chinese language is compulsory in SJK(C), and Tamil language is compulsory in SJK(T). Additionally, a National School must provide the teaching of Chinese or Tamil language, as well as indigenous languages wherever practical, if the parents of at least 15 pupils in the school request that the particular language to be taught. Critical Reading Final 2 Essay Example
Critical Reading Final 2 Essay Example Critical Reading Final 2 Essay Critical Reading Final 2 Essay After reading the article on Image busters by Todd Gitlin you will see that the author provided the best argument. The Authors purpose in this article was made clear and supported by the evidence. The authorââ¬â¢s purpose was to educate the reader on the severity of who is to blame for the amount of violence in society today and is it to blame on television. TV is being called a major determinant regarding media violence. The author is matter of fact and provides support in the majority of his statements. The premises of this article are on if television contributes to the violence in our society today. When reading this article it gives you a lot of insight on how the media can contribute to a lot of violence on the street. The author states in the conclusion that, for that matter the drug epidemic, the crisis of the family and the shortage of serious jobs that the image busting campaigns permit without having to take on specific associations. The author seems to have a mutual bias in this article he seems to support his facts with evidence but at the same time also justifies how television shows could not be to blame for all the violence in America. He seems to be open minded and take all of the facts into consideration when writing this article. This gives the reader a fair shot at making up their own decision by having information on both sides of the story. After reading Imagebusters the article has some assumptions from the author such as he states in his first sentence that I consider Hollywoodââ¬â¢s slashes, splatters, chain saws and car crashes a disgrace, a degradation of culture and a wound to the souls of producers and consumers alike. He also gives a conservative argument in paragraph six by saying that our culture looks to violence to resolve conflicts, and parental authority so the author is giving a broad range of things that actually could be contributing to the violence in America today. A metaphor is used to describe how todayââ¬â¢s censorious forces smell smoke; it is not in the absence of fire and again in paragraph five by saying a child who shoves another child after watching a fistfight on television is not committing a drive by shooting. Todd Gitlin uses a couple different forms of fallacies in his article. You will find in the paragraph two shows a hasty generalization that says that the Senator and Attorney General against violence on television are only cheap shots. Then if you read onto paragraph three there are bandwagon techniques that show two other authority type figures have signed on to the traditional pastime. This article does also use some cross clarification when presenting its facts by stating that television is to blame for the violence then going on to say it is caused by other actions such as parenting and authority such as in paragraph nine. After reading and reviewing again the article IMAGEBUSTERS I am still in the middle on whether I think that television is a factor in the violence in society today. The author made very good points and did not have a bias in this article because he was able to provide information from both points of view. With having to young children I do not feel it is in their best interest to watch violence on TV or movies but at the same time it is so common on television and even in cartoons that it is impossible to prevent them from seeing it.I agree with the author on parenting and authority at the end of the day you are the main example and role model in your childââ¬â¢s eyes and by teaching them right and wrong and by them having a understanding of what is right and wrong will help them to see that violence is not the answer and does not solve problems. Overall this was a great article it covered many points of views and made me as the reader consider different scenarios of why or how violence is interpreted today and what is the cause and who is to actually blame.I feel out of the two articles this one carried the best argument because in the first article TV ISNT VIOLENT ENOUGH by Mike Oppenheim the author seems to already have a bias and provides a lot of information and to me it was k ind of misleading because it went into detail about stabbing and arteries and was kind of all over the place. Todd Gitlin did a better job in organizing his thoughts and supplying significant support and was open minded in his article leaving it to the reader to decide what their thoughts where on the subject.

A Writers Best Friend
A Writers Best Friend A Writerââ¬â¢s Best Friend A Writerââ¬â¢s Best Friend By Mark Nichol I was bemused recently to read in the acknowledgments section of a book the authorââ¬â¢s expression of gratitude toward someone who had read the manuscript before publication. The writer thanked the other person for ââ¬Å"doing great proofreading,â⬠but he followed that comment with ââ¬Å"Not copy editing [sic]; we were both cautious about that, as our strongly held opinions donââ¬â¢t often match.â⬠My first impression was that the bookââ¬â¢s author has or had at the time a fundamental misunderstanding of copyediting (since the book was published, the closed-compound version of that term has come to prevail), as he implied that such a process would interfere with his expression of his views. (The person who assisted him is an expert in the bookââ¬â¢s subject matter.) Thatââ¬â¢s absurd, because no editing role certainly not copyediting involves revisions of writersââ¬â¢ expressions of their beliefs or judgments. A developmental editor for a book publisher, or an assigning editor of a periodical, might discuss this issue with a writer but generally does not impose on the authorââ¬â¢s convictions; presumably, the opportunity for the author to express these ideas is the reason the content is being published in the first place. But then I considered that perhaps, by ââ¬Å"strongly held opinions,â⬠the writer meant his notions of what constitutes good writing. Perhaps he was referring to the fact that his ideas about how to construct prose conflicts with those of the person who reviewed the manuscript for him. This possibility led me to reflect on my long-held opinion, acquired through decades of painful experience, that thereââ¬â¢s a strong correlation between good writers and good grace when it comes to responding to grammatical and syntactical revisions, concomitant with the disturbing degree to which many poor writers protest such improvements. For in this case, the book suffered greatly not only from the fact it, at least before it was submitted to the publisher, was proofread but not copyedited. It also was compromised by the apparent lack of copyediting (or any editing) during the production phase of publication. The writing is verbose, repetitive, poorly organized, and clumsy (barely) competent, but dull and tiring to read, and in dire need of attention from both a developmental editor and a copy editor. This mediocrity was all the more disappointing because of the anticipation with which I had approached the book, which covers a topic of great interest to me. I was especially puzzled about the writing quality because the book dates to the early 1980s, the last period in which a reader could count on well-edited books before, for many but fortunately not all publishing companies, the bottom line became more important than the line edit. Ultimately, though, that this book is an exception to the rule is not the writerââ¬â¢s fault; the publisher let him and me and other readers of this book down. But writers arenââ¬â¢t helpless in the face of this trend; if they lack a partner or other close associate qualified and willing to review a manuscript (or even if such an ally is put to work), they can resort to pre-editing. Thatââ¬â¢s the now-widespread practice of preempting a publishing companyââ¬â¢s possible neglect or short-changing of the editing process, and/or improving the chance of the manuscriptââ¬â¢s acceptance, by hiring a freelance developmental editor and/or a freelance copy editor to polish it before submitting it to publishers. Itââ¬â¢s unfortunate that the assembly-line model that now prevails in the publishing industry necessitates this step for one or both reasons stated, but though it requires a financial investment by the writer, itââ¬â¢s a wise strategy that enhances the likelihood both that the manuscript will be published and that the book will succeed. Another wise strategy is to have a little humility about oneââ¬â¢s writing ability and the value of one or more objective second opinions. Iââ¬â¢m a good writer, though not a great one, but even if I did claim (and perhaps actually have) more talent, I would, as I do in reality, welcome both substantial and mechanical revisions that make me look even better. For me and many good and great writers itââ¬â¢s a no-brainer, but that indirect reference to my earlier comment about the correlation of writing talent to amenability to editing reminds me of another observation: Common sense isnââ¬â¢t as common as it should be. Polymath a Man of Many Talents Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Polymath a Man of Many Talents - Research Paper Example A person of great stature can be a tragic hero not anyone else and these guidelines were followed by almost all the great writers, this goes to show a lot about Aristotle and his achievements. William Shakespeare also incorporated Aristotleââ¬â¢s guidelines in his tragedies. Hamlet is a classic example of the same, Hamlet suffers all along in the tragedy, he was the tragic hero because he was a person with great stature, the Prince of Denmark. Aristotle also wrote about tragic flaws and how the same affected the tragic hero. This paper will shed more light upon the life and the philosophy of one and only Aristotle. ââ¬Å"Aristotle (384ââ¬â322 B.C.E.) numbers among the greatest philosophers of all time. Judged solely in terms of his philosophical influence, only Plato is his peer: Aristotle's works shaped centuries of philosophy from Late Antiquity through the Renaissance, and even today continue to be studied with keen, non-antiquarian interest. A prodigious researcher and wr iter, Aristotle left a great body of work, perhaps numbering as many as two-hundred treatises, from which approximately thirty-one survive.â⬠(Aristotle) Aristotleââ¬â¢s Philosophy Procrastination can be sustained by rational decisions and this can even be applied on an addict in order to cure him of his addiction. Intransitive preferences, comprehensively throws light upon our delays which may seem to be irrational and it also expansively presents our preference for rewards which we may get immediately; it also presents our regrets later for having made our choice. A report that is due on Thursday is only worked upon on Tuesday or Wednesday but not Monday and this goes to show the theory of intransitive preference, this procrastination and the belief in working upon the report tomorrow is what this theory is all about. This paper will expansively present the concept of aesthetics, the story of David and the choice that he made will also be analyzed in this paper.
